Soliu Oyesiji, April 22, 2026April 22, 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a fresh set of appointments across key education agencies, naming new leadership for the National Examinations Council (NECO), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, while also renewing the tenure of the head of the National Library of Nigeria.

The appointments, announced in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, are part of efforts to strengthen institutions under the Federal Ministry of Education.

Under the new arrangement, Prof. Modupe Adeola Adelabu has been appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of NECO, while the incumbent Registrar, Prof. Ibrahim Dantani Wushishi, retains his position.

President Tinubu also named Prof. Babatunde Salako as Chairman of the NBTE, alongside the reappointment of the Executive Secretary, Prof. Idris M. Bugaje, for a second and final term of five years.

In the polytechnic system, Engr. Dr. Bongfa Binfa has been appointed Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, N’yak-Shendam, Plateau State, for a single term of five years, succeeding the pioneer Rector, Dr. Mukaila Zakari Ya’u, whose tenure ended in March 2026.

Meanwhile, Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi’s tenure as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria has been renewed for a final five-year term, following her initial appointment in September 2021.

According to the Presidency, the appointments are aimed at consolidating ongoing reforms and improving institutional efficiency across the education sector.

Prof. Adelabu, a former Deputy Governor of Ekiti State and ex-Chairman of NBTE, was described as a seasoned academic with extensive experience in educational administration.

Similarly, Prof. Salako, a former Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR), was credited with revitalising the institute during his tenure through improved research governance and expanded global collaborations.

Dr. Binfa, who holds a PhD in Mechanical Engineering, previously served as Deputy Rector (Academic) at the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, and has a background in teaching and administration within the polytechnic system.

On the National Library, the statement noted that Prof. Anunobi has driven key reforms, including the development of digital platforms such as the National Repository of Nigeria and the National Virtual Library, as well as progress on the long-delayed headquarters project in Abuja.

“The President expects that the renewal of her tenure will ensure continuity in the implementation of ongoing reforms, completion of the National Library Headquarters, and execution of the institution’s 2025–2030 Strategic Plan,” the statement added.
