Melaye Blasts Tinubu Over ‘Judicial Overreach,’ Warns Against Slide Into Authoritarianism

Soliu Oyesiji, April 19, 2026April 19, 2026

A former lawmaker, Dino Melaye, has accused President Bola Tinubu of overstepping constitutional boundaries, alleging undue influence over the nation’s judiciary.

Melaye, who served in both chambers of the National Assembly, made the remarks during an appearance on the ‘MIC On’ podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye.

He criticised the president’s recent comments on the leadership crisis within the African Democratic Congress, arguing that such pronouncements encroach on the role of the courts.

“Tinubu is acting like a totalitarian. He is not a court of law to determine who is legal or illegal,” Melaye said, insisting that issues of legality should be left strictly to the judiciary.

On the controversy surrounding the party’s national convention, the former senator defended the ADC’s position, maintaining that its actions were consistent with existing court orders.

“We are simply maintaining the status quo as directed by the court. There was no order stopping us from continuing our congresses,” he stated.

Melaye further stressed that the opposition party would continue to challenge what he described as executive excesses, insisting that power ultimately resides with the people.

“We will assert our rights and remind the government that authority belongs to Nigerians, not those in office,” he added.
