Africa Day 2026 Unveiled in Abuja With Calls for Urgent Action on Water, Sanitation

Editor, April 16, 2026April 16, 2026

The Pan African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission has officially unveiled plans for the Africa Day Celebration 2026 in Abuja, alongside the launch of a continent-wide Essay Competition, framing both as a call to action for Africa’s future.

The Mission describes this year’s event as more than a commemoration, emphasizing its role in advancing development priorities under Agenda 2063, tagged ‘The Africa We Want’.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the Global President, Pan African AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission Special Envoy to the African Union, Amb. Stephen Gbatigbi Ben-Joel, said the programme is designed as a fusion of policy engagement and cultural celebration.

“Today marks not just the announcement of an event, but the unveiling of a continental call to action, scheduled for May 23 to May 25, 2026, the three-day celebration will focus on the theme: Assuring Sustainable Water Availability and Safe Sanitation Systems to Achieve the Goals of Agenda 2063,” Ben-Joel said.

Millions across Africa still lack access to clean water and sanitation – a situation that continues to undermine health, education, and economic productivity across the continent.

According to Ben-Joel, “the platform will also serve as a space to push for increased “investment, innovation, and collaboration in the water and sanitation sector”.

In his acceptance address, the Chairman of the Local Organizing Committee for Africa Day Celebration 2026, Amb. Phil Roberts, noted that the commemoration of Africa Day on May 25 represents the vision of African leaders in shaping sustainable development.

“This historic day represents more than a date on the calendar. It represents the courage, vision, and unity of African leaders who believed that the destiny of Africa must be shaped by Africans themselves,” he said, while expressing gratitude for the trust placed in the committee to deliver the prestigious celebration in Abuja.

The event is expected to feature activities such as the Africa Unity Walk, Africa Day Conference, and cultural showcases aimed at fostering collaboration and youth engagement.

Reaffirming the committee’s position, Roberts said the initiative would create “a memorable platform that celebrates Africa’s heritage while inspiring new partnerships for development,” urging stakeholders to work towards “an Africa that is peaceful, prosperous, integrated and sustainable.”

In her remarks, the Director-General of the AU Agenda 2063 Diplomatic Mission, Amb. Dr. Elizabeth Emeka-Onwuchekwa, called for urgent and collective action across Africa to address critical development challenges, particularly in water and sanitation.

She warned that Africa stands “at a defining moment in history,” stressing that decisions made today will shape the continent’s future, noting that access to sustainable water systems is “not just a policy issue; it is a human imperative… about dignity, health, opportunity, and inclusive development.”

Speaking with RBN shortly after the conference, the Executive Director, Glotrade One World Market, Catalina Matias and the Public Relations Officer, Association of Women in Diplomacy ADWIN, Cecilia John, both advocate support for the 2063 Agenda of the African Union.

The Africa Day Celebration observed on May 25 is aimed at bringing together governments, development partners, and the private sector to scale up investments, innovation, and collaboration while empowering communities to take ownership of sustainable solutions.

For Africa Day Essay Competition 2026, themed “Reimagining Africa: Lessons from History, Pathways to the Future,” the Diplomatic Mission urged schools, parents, and stakeholders to encourage participation while calling on the media to ‘amplify the message’ and promote a narrative of progress and shared responsibility that align with the aspirations of Agenda 2063.

The competition seeks to inspire critical thinking and creativity among young Africans, with submissions at panafrica63essay@gmail.com due by May 4, 2026.
