Strait of Hormuz Reopens as US, Iran Agree to Two-Week Ceasefire

David Egbede, April 8, 2026April 8, 2026

Iran has confirmed a temporary ceasefire with the United States following an announcement by former US President Donald Trump, paving the way for the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, safe passage through the waterway will be allowed for two weeks in coordination with the country’s armed forces and “with due consideration of technical limitations.”

The ceasefire deal reportedly followed conditions set by Trump, who had warned of potential strikes on Iran’s energy infrastructure if Tehran failed to comply with reopening the route before a set deadline.

The Strait of Hormuz — a key artery for global oil and gas shipments — had remained largely shut since late February after military actions involving the US and Israel.

A senior US official disclosed that Israel is also expected to comply with what Trump described as a “double sided CEASEFIRE.”

Pakistan played a mediating role in the agreement, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirming that an “immediate ceasefire everywhere” had taken effect, including in Lebanon.

“I warmly welcome the sagacious gesture and extend deepest gratitude to the leadership of both the countries and invite their delegations to Islamabad on Friday … to further negotiate for a conclusive agreement to settle all disputes,” Sharif said.

Trump also revealed that Iran submitted a 10-point proposal considered a “workable basis” for negotiations, which reportedly includes calls for the lifting of sanctions.
