The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation of the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Amupitan, over allegations of partisanship.
In a statement issued by its spokesman, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party cited the resurfacing of a 2023 pro-Bola Ahmed Tinubu social media post allegedly linked to the INEC chairman as a major concern.
According to the ADC, the development raises serious questions about the credibility and neutrality of the electoral body, warning that it could erode public trust in the commission.
The party also alleged that there were attempts to alter digital records to hide past political affiliations, describing such actions as a threat to transparency and accountability.
It stressed that anyone in charge of overseeing elections must not only be independent but must also be seen as impartial at all times.
The ADC maintained that the chairman’s alleged conduct falls short of the standard expected of someone occupying such a critical position in a democratic system.
“This is why Professor Amupitan must resign. Now. Anything less is an insult to the Nigerian people and a dangerous precedent for our democracy,” the statement said.
The party further revealed plans to escalate the matter by updating petitions to relevant authorities, including foreign governments and the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).
It added that it would intensify civil disobedience actions until the INEC chairman steps down.
