Plateau Killings: Akpabio to Lead Senate Delegation as Lawmakers Order Police Probe

Rejoice Ewodage, March 31, 2026March 31, 2026

The Senate has directed the Inspector-General of Police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the recent killings in Anguwan Rukuba, Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State, where at least 40 people were reportedly killed.

Lawmakers also resolved to dispatch a high-level delegation, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, to visit the affected communities and commiserate with victims and residents of the state.

The resolutions followed a motion sponsored by Senators Diket Plang (Plateau Central) and Dachung Pam Mwadkon (Plateau North), who raised concerns over the worsening security situation in Kanam and Jos North local government areas.

Presenting the motion, Plang said Plateau, once widely referred to as the “Home of Peace and Tourism,” has witnessed renewed violence in recent weeks after a period of relative calm. He cited attacks in Kanam Local Government Area earlier in March, as well as the March 29, 2026 assault in Anguwan Rukuba, which reportedly occurred while residents were going about their evening activities.

The lawmaker noted that the attacks appeared coordinated and were directed at civilians in populated communities, heightening fears of further escalation. He also drew attention to an earlier ambush in the Garga axis of Kanam, where a joint security patrol team was attacked, leading to casualties among security personnel.

During deliberations, senators expressed concern over the growing complexity of the crisis, describing it as a mix of economic, ethnic, and religious tensions that continue to threaten peace and stability in the state. They warned that recurring violence has forced residents to flee their homes, disrupted farming activities, and could worsen food security challenges.

The Senate stressed that protecting lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government and urged security agencies to adopt more proactive strategies, including establishing permanent operational bases in vulnerable communities and strengthening intelligence gathering and aerial surveillance to track down criminal elements.

Lawmakers also called for increased recruitment into the Nigeria Police Force and the military to address manpower shortages in tackling insecurity.

As part of its resolutions, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of those killed and urged the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to provide relief materials such as food, medical supplies, and shelter to displaced persons in the affected areas.
