Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest to demand urgent action on lingering welfare and academic challenges.
The demonstration, organised by the Students’ Union, saw large numbers of students gather at the school’s main gate in the early hours, chanting and displaying placards while maintaining order.
According to the union leadership, the protest was approved during a congress held at Awo Café, with a clear commitment to non-violence. Union officials, including President Adelani David and General Secretary Habeeb Oke Isa, stressed that the action was aimed at drawing attention to pressing issues affecting students.
Key concerns raised include ongoing transportation difficulties, accommodation challenges, and delays linked to the institution’s e-portal upgrade, which has reportedly hindered course registration and access to results.
The union also criticised plans to evacuate students from Awolowo Hall Blocks 7 and 8 for renovation without adequate notice or alternative housing arrangements.
Reaffirming their stance, the Students’ Union called for immediate intervention from the university management to address the concerns and restore normal academic activities.
