Real Madrid Weigh Managerial Options as Mourinho Signals Desire for Bernabéu Return

Soliu Oyesiji, April 28, 2026

Real Madrid are reportedly evaluating their managerial future amid growing speculation that José Mourinho is open to a sensational return to the Santiago Bernabéu for a second spell in charge.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on X, Mourinho has indicated through close associates that he would welcome the opportunity to return to the Spanish giants, viewing it as a potential “second chapter” at the club.

“Real Madrid are now informed about José Mourinho’s desire to return. Mourinho has made it clear to people close to him that he would like to return and have a second chance at the club. Real Madrid will decide on the new manager soon,” Romano posted.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, a period in which he won the La Liga title and the Copa del Rey, while also restoring the club’s competitiveness in Europe after years of underachievement.

The Portuguese coach’s name has resurfaced amid broader discussions about the club’s long-term coaching direction, with internal deliberations reportedly ongoing at the Bernabéu.

Club president Florentino Pérez is understood to be taking personal charge of the decision-making process regarding the next managerial appointment.

Romano further reported that Pérez will oversee and determine the club’s next steps as Real Madrid prepare to shape their plans for the coming seasons.

While no official decision has been announced, sources suggest that a resolution is expected in the near future as the club continues its strategic review.

Mourinho’s possible return has gained attention due to his vast experience across Europe’s top leagues and his enduring reputation as one of football’s most decorated and high-profile managers.

For now, he remains one of the prominent names linked with the role as speculation around the Bernabéu leadership situation continues to intensify.
