Nasir El-Rufai Freed After Weeks in ICPC Detention

David Egbede, March 28, 2026March 28, 2026

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

The development was confirmed by his son, Bashir El-Rufai, in a post shared on his X handle on Friday, where he announced that his father had regained freedom after weeks in detention.

“My beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that is a lame excuse of a pathetic institution.

“Thank you all for all the support. Our family shall never forget these times. We have overcome, as the El-Rufais,” he wrote.

El-Rufai had been held by the ICPC since February 18 over allegations related to financial misconduct and other issues.

As of the time of this report, the anti-graft agency has not released an official statement detailing the conditions surrounding his release.

Meanwhile, tragedy struck the family earlier on Friday as the former governor’s mother, Umma El-Rufai, passed away in Cairo, Egypt.
