ICPC Clarifies Court Proceedings in El-Rufai Detention Case

David Egbede, March 18, 2026March 18, 2026

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has clarified the circumstances surrounding the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai, following what it described as inaccurate media reports.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Commission denied claims that it approached the court to seek a fresh extension of El-Rufai’s detention. Instead, it explained that its appearance in court was in response to an application filed by El-Rufai on March 6, 2026, challenging the validity of an earlier remand order granted on March 5.

According to the ICPC, during the proceedings, its legal team served El-Rufai’s counsel with a response to the application. The defence subsequently requested time to reply, prompting the Magistrate to adjourn the matter until March 31, 2026.

The Commission outlined that the former governor’s detention followed due legal process. An initial 14-day remand order was granted to allow investigation into allegations of money laundering and abuse of office. This was later extended by another 14 days on March 5 after the initial order expired.

It further noted that an earlier attempt by El-Rufai’s legal team to overturn the February 19 remand order was dismissed on March 9. As it stands, the former governor remains in lawful custody under the subsisting court order.

The ICPC emphasized that its actions are in line with the provisions of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015 and reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and the rule of law.

The Commission also reiterated its stance against conducting trials in the media, urging the public to rely on verified updates and allow the judicial process to run its course.
