Foxes’ fairytale turns nightmare: Leicester relegated again, 10 years after EPL title

Soliu Oyesiji, April 22, 2026

Ten years after their historic title win, Leicester City have endured a dramatic fall, as a 2-2 draw against Hull City confirmed their relegation to League One and triggered angry reactions from supporters.

The result represents a painful chapter for the Foxes, who famously won the Premier League in 2016 under Claudio Ranieri. That remarkable achievement now contrasts sharply with their current situation, as the club drops into the third tier following consecutive relegations.

Supporters at the King Power Stadium made their frustrations clear, booing players before kickoff and again at full time. Many also directed chants at club chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, calling for changes in leadership amid growing dissatisfaction.

Manager Gary Rowett acknowledged the scale of the setback, admitting the team’s struggles had built up over the course of the season. He said relegation reflected deeper issues and described it as a difficult phase the club must learn from.

Leicester showed brief resilience during the match, responding to an early setback with goals from Jordan James and Luke Thomas. However, a second-half equaliser from Oli McBurnie ensured the result that sealed their fate, leaving them seven points from safety with only two matches left.

The club’s decline has been rapid. After their 2015-16 title triumph, Leicester went on to win the FA Cup in 2021 and reached the semifinals of the UEFA Europa Conference League. But relegation from the top flight in 2023 was followed by another drop this season, despite managerial changes involving Steve Cooper and Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Off-field challenges worsened the situation, including a points deduction for breaching financial rules, which further undermined their fight for survival.

In a statement after the match, Srivaddhanaprabha accepted responsibility and apologised to fans, promising that steps would be taken to rebuild the club and restore expected standards.

With only one win in their last 18 matches, Leicester’s decline has been as striking as their rise. The former champions now face a difficult rebuilding process, with fans demanding urgent reforms and hoping for a return to better days.
