The Taraba State Police Command has confirmed the death of five persons after they allegedly consumed meat laced with poison in Takum Local Government Area of the state. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, also left eight others hospitalised and currently receiving medical treatment.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Command’s Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, said preliminary findings indicate that the victims consumed meat suspected to have been contaminated with a toxic substance intended for rodent control.
Authorities said the affected individuals were rushed to medical facilities for urgent care, but five were confirmed dead while others remain under observation. The police have commenced investigations to determine how the contamination occurred and who may be responsible.
The Command assured residents that efforts are underway to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident and prevent a recurrence. Residents have been advised to exercise caution in handling and consuming food items while the investigation continues.
