Manchester United moved to the brink of securing UEFA Champions League qualification with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brentford at Old Trafford on Monday, as captain Bruno Fernandes edged closer to a historic Premier League milestone.
The win strengthened United’s grip on third place in the Premier League, opening up an 11-point gap over sixth-placed Brighton with just four matches remaining in the season.
Manager Michael Carrick saw his side take control early, with veteran midfielder Casemiro continuing his impressive late-season form by heading home the opener. The goal marked another highlight in what has been described as a memorable farewell campaign for the Brazilian.
United doubled their advantage when Fernandes delivered his 19th assist of the season, setting up Benjamin Sesko to score. The Portuguese playmaker now stands just one assist shy of the single-season record of 20 jointly held by Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry.

Despite United’s clinical edge, Brentford created several opportunities to level. Forward Igor Thiago was notably wasteful in front of goal during an entertaining first half, while Dango Ouattara struck the post as the visitors pushed for an equaliser.
The Bees, managed by Keith Andrews, set up a tense finale when Mathias Jensen fired in a long-range effort to reduce the deficit. However, United held firm under late pressure to secure all three points.
The result keeps United firmly on course for a return to Europe’s elite competition, while Fernandes’ consistency continues to underpin their late-season surge.
