Rejoice Ewodage, February 15, 2026February 21, 2026

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said he will support only candidates who back President Bola Tinubu in the upcoming FCT Area Council elections scheduled for February 21.

Wike made the declaration on Saturday in Abuja during the 60th birthday celebration of Senator Sandy Onor, describing the event as a celebration of six decades of scholarship, leadership, and public service.

“I have a duty to support any candidate that supports President Tinubu to win,” Wike said. “It is also my duty to ensure that any candidate that is not supporting Tinubu does not win in the election, and I owe no apology on my stand.”

The minister emphasized that his support is based solely on alignment with the President, regardless of party affiliation.

Speaking on the celebrant, Wike praised Onor as a credible ally, trustworthy friend, and a man of character. He added: “I will continue to be with you and work with you, because I know even if I am not alive today, you will not abandon my family.”

The event featured tributes from several prominent figures. Prof. Anthony Eyang highlighted Onor’s journey from academia at the University of Calabar to the Nigerian Senate and Cross River State politics, noting it reflects a life devoted to learning and leadership.

Other well-wishers included Senator Philip Aduda, chairman of the planning committee; former Governor Samuel Otom of Benue; former Governor Okezie Ikpeazu of Abia State; and Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), former Attorney General of the Federation. They described Onor as an icon, courageous, and a man committed to service.

Academics also honoured Onor with a Festschrift, a book of essays celebrating his contributions to history, which was unveiled by Ikpeazu on behalf of Wike and friends, with N50 million contributed in the celebrant’s honour.

Onor, reflecting on his 60th year, said: “Everything becomes insignificant if the finger of God is absent.” He thanked his family, friends, and well-wishers for their support, promising to take their encouragement seriously.
