Derby Drama Brews as Fenerbahçe Challenge Osimhen’s Protective Mask

Soliu Oyesiji, April 24, 2026

Tensions are rising ahead of a crucial Turkish Super Lig clash as Fenerbahçe have reportedly lodged a complaint against rivals Galatasaray over the protective face mask worn by Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen.

The complaint, submitted to the Turkish Football Federation, argues that the striker’s mask could pose a safety risk to opposing players during matches.

According to Turkish outlet HT Spor, “Fenerbahçe believes that the hard protective gear used by Victor Osimhen in matches poses a risk to opposing players,” adding that the club is preparing a formal submission backed by medical evaluation.

Osimhen recently returned to action after spending more than a month sidelined with an arm injury. The 27-year-old made a brief appearance in Galatasaray’s midweek cup loss to Gençlerbirliği S.K., playing 13 minutes with his arm bandaged beneath a long-sleeved jersey.

The controversy comes just days before a potentially title-deciding league encounter between the two Istanbul giants on Sunday. Galatasaray currently sit top of the Super Lig table with 71 points, holding a four-point lead over second-placed Fenerbahçe with four matches remaining.

Osimhen has worn a protective mask since suffering a serious facial injury in 2021 while playing for Napoli. The Nigerian forward collided with Milan Skriniar of Inter Milan, resulting in multiple fractures to his cheekbone and eye socket.

He underwent surgery that involved the insertion of titanium plates and screws, and medical experts advised him to continue using a protective mask upon his return to football.

With the derby looming, attention now shifts to the Turkish Football Federation, whose decision on the matter could have implications for both player safety and the outcome of the title race.
