Court Stops Police, FRSC From Fining Motorists Over Third-Party Insurance Violations

David Egbede, April 24, 2026April 24, 2026

A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained the Nigeria Police and the FRSC from imposing fines on motorists who violate the Third Party Motor Vehicle Insurance Act without a valid court order.

Delivering judgment, Justice Hauwa Joseph Yilwa ruled that while both agencies are empowered to enforce the law, they do not have the authority to penalize offenders without judicial backing.

The case, filed by lawyer Deji Adeyanju, also saw the court dismiss a preliminary objection raised by the police, affirming that all parties had been duly served.
