Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has condemned the ongoing terrorist attacks in Nigeria, accusing political leaders of prioritizing their power struggles ahead of the 2027 elections instead of tackling the nation’s escalating insecurity.
Obi made the statement on Friday via a post on X, responding to a recent assault on Ngoshe community in Borno State, which reportedly targeted both a military base and an internally displaced persons (IDP) camp.
The former Governor of Anambra State said the attack resulted in the deaths of civilians and soldiers alike, with many others still reported missing.
He added that he had viewed several videos of the incident with “deep horror,” calling it a stark reminder of the daily suffering faced by many Nigerians.
Obi criticised political leaders for focusing on election calculations ahead of 2027 while insecurity continues to claim lives across the country. “How long will Nigerians continue to bear the consequences of poor leadership and mismanagement? How many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken to secure our communities, protect the vulnerable, and dismantle the structures of these insurgents?
“While Nigerians are slaughtered daily by terrorists, what is more troubling is that amid these daily killings, our political leaders are preoccupied with selfish schemings on how to steal, grab and run away with the next election cycle, and keep us in insecurity, poverty and underdevelopment,” Obi said.
