Barcelona rescued a dramatic 1–1 draw against Newcastle United in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash at St James’ Park on Tuesday night.
The Premier League side looked set for a famous victory after Harvey Barnes fired Newcastle ahead in the 86th minute, sending the home crowd into wild celebrations.
However, Barcelona struck back in stoppage time when teenage star Lamine Yamal calmly converted a penalty with virtually the last kick of the match to level the score for the Spanish giants.
Newcastle had dominated large spells of the encounter and created several chances throughout the game, but they were ultimately denied victory by the late equaliser.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick admitted after the match that his side did not perform at their best but welcomed the result, stressing that the draw puts his team in a good position ahead of the return leg in Spain.
