ADC Rivers to go Ahead With Congresses Despite Legal Disputes, Declares Unity

David Egbede, April 9, 2026April 9, 2026

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has reiterated its resolve to proceed with its ward, local government, and state congresses, despite ongoing legal battles at the national level that have sparked protests in parts of the country.

Speaking to journalists in Port Harcourt, the State Chairman, Leader Sampson, said the decision follows directives from the party’s national leadership under David Mark.

He maintained that the Rivers chapter remains united and free of internal crisis, with all structures fully mobilised for the exercise.

“We are acting on the directive of our national leadership, and we have the mandate to proceed with our congresses,” he said.

Party officials from across the state’s local government areas gathered at the secretariat for final preparations ahead of the exercise, which will cover more than six thousand units.

Sampson added that all legal and procedural steps have been fulfilled, including proper notification to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dismissing concerns over the ongoing litigations, he insisted that the party’s actions are in line with the law.

“There is no division within the ADC in Rivers State; we remain united at all levels—we are all united under the leadership of Rt. Honourable Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi and Senator David Mark,” he stated.

Addressing the party’s absence in a recent bye-election in the state, Sampson accused INEC of deliberately excluding the ADC.

“That was a deliberate attempt by INEC to exclude us from the democratic process,” he said.

He further alleged interference by the electoral body in the party’s internal affairs, warning of its implications for the country’s democracy.

“We cannot allow INEC to undermine or disrupt democracy in Nigeria,” he stated.

The ADC also criticised the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accusing it of attempting to weaken opposition parties.

“The ADC remains a credible alternative, and we are committed to strengthening our structure across Rivers State,” he added.

Party leaders across the local government areas have expressed readiness for the exercise, assuring members of a peaceful and credible process.

The ward and local government congresses are scheduled for April 9, while the state congress will hold on April 11.
