‘APC has Destroyed Opposition’ — Tambuwal Accuses Tinubu Govt

David Egbede, April 12, 2026April 12, 2026

Former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has strongly criticised the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, warning of a “dangerous drift” toward a one-party state in Nigeria.

Speaking after the African Democratic Congress (ADC) congress in Sokoto, Tambuwal accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of weakening opposition parties to entrench its dominance.

“The APC-led government has destroyed opposition in this country,” he said. “They have infected the Peoples Democratic Party, the Labour Party, and the New Nigeria Peoples Party. There is now a push for all parties to endorse President Tinubu as the sole candidate. That is not democracy.”

He described the ADC as a rising political force capable of restoring balance, noting that Sokoto remains central to the party’s growth.

“Sokoto remains the home of the ADC,” Tambuwal said. “From here we will continue to mobilise, strengthen our structures and build unity that will propel the party to greater national relevance.”

The former governor also praised party members for conducting transparent congresses across all levels, saying, “We have conducted successful congresses at the ward, local government, and state levels. I commend our leaders and members for their dedication and discipline throughout the process.”

On governance, Tambuwal faulted the federal government’s handling of key national issues, especially insecurity, poverty, and unemployment.

“The federal government has failed Nigerians in virtually all ramifications,” he stated. “What we see today is rising insecurity, deepening poverty, hunger, and increasing unemployment across the country.”

He further alleged plans by the ruling party to influence voters ahead of the 2027 elections.

“They plan to deploy resources during the campaigns to buy votes,” he said. “But Nigerians must ask themselves if they are ready to sell their future and mortgage the destiny of the next generation.”

Tambuwal also accused the administration of suppressing dissent and interfering with democratic institutions.

“He presented himself as a democrat, but he is acting like a pseudo-democrat,” he asserted. “There are clear efforts to muzzle the opposition and influence key institutions, including the judiciary.”

Despite the challenges, he maintained that opposition forces would remain resolute.
“We are standing firm, no shaking,” Tambuwal declared. “We will continue to defend and sustain multiparty democracy in Nigeria.”

Expressing confidence ahead of future elections, he added, “By the grace of God, we will win. This time, no one will rig us out. We are determined to rescue Nigeria and restore hope to our people.”
