Ignore Rumours — Nnamdi Kanu’s Appeal is Progressing as Scheduled, Says Lawyer

David Egbede, April 9, 2026April 9, 2026

Counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Aloy Ejimakor, has dismissed speculations suggesting any delay or abandonment of his client’s appeal, insisting the process is moving in line with legal procedures.

In a statement, Ejimakor said the appeal challenging Kanu’s conviction is already underway and following due process.

“As already known, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s Notice (and Grounds) of appeal was filed in February 2026. This is the first and most important step that activated the appeal,” he said.

He explained that the record of appeal has been compiled and transmitted, with the case now at the stage of exchanging briefs between both parties.

“The next visible milestone is the transmission of the record of appeal (which has been done), followed by the exchange of briefs, which is in process,” he added.

Ejimakor stressed that the appeal is already “live,” noting that filing the notice in February officially set the process in motion.

He further clarified that the case will rely mainly on written arguments, with oral submissions only used to address key issues, adding that no fresh evidence will be introduced at this stage.

Urging the public to disregard rumours, he said the appeal follows a clear, structured legal process that could take months, although terrorism-related cases are often fast-tracked.

“This is the standard, transparent roadmap laid down by Nigerian law… the appeal is progressing exactly as the rules require — one procedural step at a time,” he said.

In November 2025, James Omotosho sentenced Kanu to life imprisonment on terrorism charges. He is currently serving his sentence in Sokoto.
In his appeal, Kanu is seeking to overturn both his conviction and sentence, arguing that the judgment was flawed and should be set aside.
