The Chairman, African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Sokoto State, Alhaji Bello Isiyaku-Kigan, has assured that the party’s leadership remained intact at both the state and national levels.
He faulted the action of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over the removal of the party’s leadership, describing it as a misinterpretation of a court ruling.
Isiyaku-Kigan told newsmen at a press conference on Monday in Sokoto that the development of leadership dispute was initiated in court by Nafi’u Bala.
“We view this development as a troubling step that could undermine democracy and the constitutional rights of political parties in Nigeria.
“The timing of this action raises serious concerns, particularly as opposition parties are working to strengthen cooperation ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The ADC remains a law-abiding political party with established internal and legal mechanisms to resolve leadership disputes,” he said.
Isiyaku-Kigan said recent political developments had created confusion among members and the public, particularly over the status of the party’s national leadership.
He explained that the court had earlier directed that the status quo be maintained pending further hearing, warning that contrary interpretations were misleading.
“The court judgment clearly stated that the status quo should remain. Any action suggesting dissolution of the leadership creates unnecessary mischief and doubts,” he said.
He described INEC’s interpretation of the ruling as “wrong and mischievous”, adding that the matter would be challenged legally for clarity and justice.
The chairman maintained that the party’s current leadership remains valid and would continue steering its affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He added that the ADC Sokoto state chapter considered the action as a potential act of sabotage capable of creating undue interference in the affairs of political parties.
Isiyaku-Kigan stressed that the action poses dangers of weakening public confidence in the electoral process and generating unnecessary tension among party members, supporters and general public nationwide.
“We call on INEC and all relevant authorities to maintain strict neutrality as required by law and avoid any action that may be perceived as bias or undue interference in party affairs.
“Respect due process and allow the courts to determine the matter fairly,” he advised.
The chairman disclosed that preparations were ongoing for party congresses at various levels and the national convention scheduled for April 18.
According to him, the state chapter has begun mobilising members and stakeholders to ensure successful participation in the forthcoming congresses and convention.
He urged members to remain calm and united, assuring them that the leadership crisis would be resolved through legal means.
