Resident Doctors to Embark on Nationwide Strike this Tuesday

David Egbede, April 5, 2026April 5, 2026

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced plans to commence a nationwide strike starting Tuesday, April 7, following ongoing engagements with the Federal Government over welfare concerns.

In a statement issued by Secretary-General Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, the association said the decision came after extensive consultations with members nationwide and deliberations at an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting held virtually.

The strike, scheduled to begin at 12 a.m., will involve resident doctors in federal, state, and private health institutions across the country. NARD, however, noted that it remains open to continued dialogue aimed at reaching mutually beneficial outcomes.

The association stressed the need for the reinstatement of the Professional Allowance Table, describing it as critical to improving doctors’ welfare, boosting morale, and retaining skilled professionals in Nigeria’s healthcare system.

NARD also called for the prompt payment of outstanding promotion and salary arrears, alongside the timely release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund to enhance training and capacity development.

While expressing optimism over ongoing discussions, the association urged members to remain united, reaffirming its commitment to pursuing improved working conditions and a more responsive healthcare system through sustained engagement with authorities.
