2027: APC Insists Presidential Ticket Remains Open Despite Backing Tinubu

David Egbede, March 22, 2026March 22, 2026

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has stated that all interested members are free to contest its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 elections, despite the party’s strong backing for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seek re-election.

Although party leaders have openly endorsed Tinubu for a second term, the APC insists the race will remain open to other aspirants.

Deputy National Organising Secretary, Chidi Duru, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to internal democracy, noting that while a consensus candidate could emerge, no member would be prevented from running.

He explained that consensus arrangements are a common political practice, but should not exclude individuals willing to test their popularity within the party.

Duru added that incumbents often enjoy an advantage, especially when party members are satisfied with their performance.

According to him, this aligns with the “right of first refusal,” where performing officeholders are typically given the opportunity to seek another term.

He stressed that performance remains a key factor in determining whether a candidate is retained or replaced.

Duru also noted that this principle applies across all elective positions, including governors, emphasizing that capable leaders should be allowed to complete a second term.

He dismissed concerns about possible internal conflicts, pointing out that the constitution guarantees elected officials the right to seek re-election.

The APC is expected to deliberate further on its internal affairs during its national convention scheduled to take place in Abuja from March 27 to 28, 2026.
