Madam Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, wife of the first elected governor of Ogun State, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, has died at the age of 100.
Her passing was confirmed in a statement released on Tuesday by her daughter, Olubukunola Onabanjo, which disclosed that the centenarian died peacefully on Monday.
Described as the matriarch of the Onabanjo family, the statement noted that Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, who was born in 1925, was “called to glory” on Monday, January 11.
“The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, announces with deep sorrow, but with gratitude to Almighty God, the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother,” the statement read.
The family expressed gratitude for her long and fulfilled life, highlighting the enduring legacy of love, strength, and faith she leaves behind, while praying for her soul to rest in perfect peace.
Her late husband, Chief Olabisi Onabanjo, served as Ogun State’s first civilian governor during the Second Republic from 1979 to 1983. He was also a distinguished journalist and columnist, best known for his influential weekly column, Ayekooto, before his death in 1990.
