Federal Government Slams Contractors Over Slow Progress on Key North-South Highway

Ogah Adikpe, January 13, 2026January 13, 2026

The Federal Government has issued a stern warning to contractors handling the critical Abuja-Lokoja road projects, labelling the current pace of work “not encouraging” as deadlines loom for the vital link between Northern and Southern Nigeria.

During an inspection tour on Monday, Dr. Abiodun Essiet, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement, voiced frustration over several lagging sections of the highway, which saw massive gridlock during the recent festive season.

The Progress Report

While one section is nearly finished, several others are stuck in the early stages of development. The transition to concrete pavement—designed for better durability—has slowed down the timeline for several firms.

Contractors cited challenges for the delays, including:

  • Delayed payments for completed certificates.
  • Complex traffic management on the busy corridor.
  • Security concerns and site access issues.

However, Dr. Essiet pushed back, insisting that President Bola Tinubu is committed to the project through the Renewed Hope Intervention Fund.

“Funding should not be an excuse for delay,” Essiet stated. “Contractors were awarded these projects based on their demonstrated capacity. The President has assured that funds will be made available, but that does not stop contractors from intensifying work.” He said.
