Unidentified gunmen suspected to be bandits have attacked a wedding convoy in Unguwar Nagunda Community, Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State, killing at least two people and injuring several others, including the bride.
An unspecified number of wedding guests were reportedly abducted during the attack, which occurred on Sunday night.
Efforts to reach the Katsina State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq, for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
The attack comes as the state government was preparing to release 70 detained suspected bandits as part of measures to consolidate an ongoing peace deal between banditry-affected communities and repentant criminals. Authorities said the initiative has previously led to the release of more than 1,000 persons held captive by suspected bandits in various attacks, noting that such tactics are employed in conflict resolution strategies globally.
The Katsina State government condemned the attack and reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining peace while ensuring the safety of citizens.
