The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening military cooperation with the South African Army, with both sides seeking to enhance regional security and professional military standards across Africa.

Speaking on the partnership, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, on Tuesday emphasized the importance of strategic collaboration to address emerging security threats and bolster the operational capabilities of both armies.

The cooperation spans counter-terrorism, improvised explosive device (IED) detection, and battlefield operations, as well as professional military education.

As part of the partnership, Nigerian officers are to attend courses at the South African Defence College, while South African officers continue to instruct at key Nigerian institutions, including the Army War College and the Armed Forces Command and Staff College.

Discussions also focused on technical and aviation cooperation, particularly in maintenance and pilot training, as both armies seek to strengthen operational readiness. Both sides committed to continued joint training, operational exchanges, and capacity development, aimed at promoting stability and collective defense across the continent.

The partnership reflects a growing trend of regional collaboration among African militaries, reinforcing efforts to address security challenges through knowledge exchange and shared expertise.
