Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered an investigation into the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of world-renowned author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The move follows a public statement by the novelist, who accused Euracare Multispecialist Hospital in Lagos of “criminal negligence” and professional impropriety.
Little Nkanu, one of Adichie’s twin sons, passed away on January 7, 2026, after undergoing medical procedures intended to prepare him for an emergency medical evacuation to the United States.
In a detailed account that has sparked nationwide conversation, Adichie alleged that her son was overdosed on the sedative propofol by an anaesthesiologist and was subsequently left unmonitored.
The state government, through a statement by the Special Adviser on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, expressed condolences to the Adichie-Esege family, adding that the state maintains a “zero-tolerance” policy for medical misconduct.
In response, the management of Euracare Multispecialist Hospital expressed “heartfelt condolences” but pushed back against the allegations of negligence.
Euracare maintains that its team acted in accordance with international clinical protocols and is currently conducting its own internal investigation while cooperating with state regulators.
