11 Years After, MultiChoice to Discontinue Showmax Service

Rejoice Ewodage, March 5, 2026March 5, 2026

MultiChoice has announced plans to discontinue its streaming platform, Showmax after 11 years of its launch, as part of a broader strategy to strengthen its digital services.

In an email notice to customers dated March 5, 2026, the company said the decision followed a comprehensive review by the Showmax Board and is aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability in an increasingly competitive streaming market.

The company, however, assured subscribers that the service will continue to operate for now, noting that there will be no immediate interruption to streaming.

According to MultiChoice, customers are not required to take any action at this stage while the company prepares for the transition.

The company also said Showmax subscribers remain a priority and that further information, including timelines and any required steps, will be communicated well in advance.

MultiChoice added that streaming will remain a key part of its strategy, with continued investment in premium content, technology innovation, and partnerships aimed at improving the entertainment experience for customers.

Showmax was launched in 2015 by MultiChoice as one of Africa’s homegrown streaming platforms, offering a mix of international films, television series, documentaries and locally produced content across several African markets.

The service was positioned to compete with global streaming providers while promoting African storytelling through initiatives such as Showmax Originals.

However, the platform has faced increasing pressure in the highly competitive streaming industry, where rising content production costs and competition from global platforms have challenged regional providers.

Industry reports indicate that the Showmax business recorded significant financial losses in recent years, raising concerns about its long-term sustainability.

The development also comes after French media group Canal+ completed its takeover of MultiChoice in 2025, with the company reviewing parts of its operations as it seeks to streamline investments and strengthen its overall digital strategy.
