President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has felicitated former President and elder statesman, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, on his 89th birthday, celebrated on March 5.
In a statement released by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, President Tinubu lauded Obasanjo’s immense contributions to Nigeria, Africa, and the world.
“We rejoice with Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, whose towering influence in our country, across Africa, and beyond is significant,” the President said.
He also highlighted the courage and sacrifices of the elder statesman, recalling his leadership as Nigeria’s military Head of State from 1976 to 1979—during which he handed over power to a civilian president—and later as the first civilian president of the Fourth Republic from 1999 to 2007.
“Chief Obasanjo’s historic experiences, including leading troops to preserve Nigeria’s unity, enduring imprisonment for speaking out against tyranny, and consistently advocating for Africa’s political and economic interests, reflect his unwavering commitment to nation-building,” Tinubu added.
As Obasanjo turns 89, the President also commended his intellectual contributions to Nigeria’s development through his books and regular interventions, emphasizing the patriotism and wisdom he continues to bring to national discourse.
“We pray for more years of good health, strength, and wisdom for Chief Olusegun Obasanjo as he continues to serve the nation and humanity,” President Tinubu concluded.
