The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, on Wednesday inaugurated an eight-member committee to drive the implementation of state policing and advance his strategic vision for the Nigeria Police Force, shortly after his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous IGP.
The inauguration marked his first official meeting with senior police officers since his confirmation, which followed the unanimous endorsement of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council and his subsequent swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was named chairman of the eight-member committee tasked with overseeing the state police implementation process.
Addressing the top hierarchy of the force, the IGP said leadership is “not about position but responsibility,” stressing that professionalism and accountability must guide conduct and operations across commands nationwide.
He stressed that authority is most effective when exercised with restraint and underscored that respect for human rights must remain a core principle, noting that every Nigerian deserves to be treated with dignity, fairness, and justice, regardless of their status or background.
Disu further outlined plans to enhance internal oversight by empowering the Public Complaint Unit and X-Squad to operate independently.
On the topic of decentralization, he explained that the initiative would enable different levels of government to play an active role in maintaining security.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Disu as Acting Inspector‑General of Police on February 24, 2026, after the resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.
