Rejoice Ewodage, March 2, 2026March 2, 2026

Olatunji Rilwan Disu has officially been confirmed as Nigeria’s Inspector-General of Police, following a unanimous approval by the Nigeria Police Council on Monday, with a formal swearing-in ceremony fixed for Wednesday, during the Federal Executive Council meeting.

The council convened at the State House under President Tinubu’s leadership, with key federal officials and state governors in attendance.

Among them were Vice President Kashim Shettima, Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Minister of Police Affairs Senator Ibrahim Gaidam, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, and Head of Service Esther Didi Walson-Jack. Retired DIG Hashimu Argungu, Chairman of the Police Service Commission, also participated in line with constitutional requirements.

Disu’s confirmation follows the resignation of former Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun who had cited family matters that required his attention, which was promptly accepted by President Bola Tinubu.

Several state governors and senior officials praised the new police chief for his professional record. Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu commended Disu for his tenure as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad between 2015 and 2021, noting his contribution to crime control and public safety in the state.

Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State described the appointment as a recognition of Disu’s exemplary career, while FCT Minister Nyesom Wike lauded his professionalism and efficiency during his service in Rivers State and the FCT, particularly in anti-kidnapping and criminal investigation roles. Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah also endorsed Disu’s confirmation.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent.

Over the years, he has risen through the ranks, acquiring multiple qualifications in public administration, forensic investigation, criminology, security, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship, reflecting a modern, knowledge-driven approach to policing.

Before his appointment as IGP, Disu served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

His career spans critical operational, investigative, and strategic command positions nationwide.

The appointment comes just 48 days before he would have reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 on April 13, 2026.

Under the amended Police Act, however, an IGP is eligible to serve a four-year tenure regardless of age, allowing Disu to potentially remain in office for the next few years.

His nomination will now be forwarded to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
