Ex-Niger Governor’s Fate in N1.5b Ecological Fund Case to Be Decided May 8

David Egbede, February 27, 2026

Justice Yeliam Bogoro of the Federal High Court, Lagos, has scheduled May 8, 2026, for ruling on the no-case submission filed by former Niger State Governor Muazu Babangida Aliyu and his co-defendant, Umar Muhammed Nasko, in a high-profile ecological fund fraud case.

The defendants are being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on an eight-count charge involving conspiracy, money laundering, and the misappropriation of ecological funds amounting to N1,509,791,200. Nasko, a former Commissioner for Environment, Parks, Gardens and Forest Resources, stands alongside Aliyu in the case.

During Thursday’s proceedings, the court heard final addresses from the prosecution counsel, Faruk Abdallah, as well as from the defence teams—Y. Kalamu for Aliyu and Mamman Mike Osuman, SAN, for Nasko.

Commenting on the no-case submissions, the prosecution highlighted that:

“At the close of the prosecution’s case, the first defendant opted to make a no-case submission. The first defendant filed a written no-case submission on 18th December 2025. In response thereof, the prosecution has filed this address and adopts the same as its response.”

Regarding the second defendant, the prosecution added:

“At the close of the prosecution’s case, the second defendant opted to make a no-case submission. The second defendant filed a written no-case submission on November 23, 2025.”

Justice Bogoro adjourned the matter until May 8, 2026, when the court is expected to deliver its ruling on whether the defendants’ no-case submissions will be upheld.
