Outrage as Gunmen Kill Abuja Nurse After Shift; NANNM Demands Justice

Ogah Adikpe, January 6, 2026February 21, 2026

The Nigerian healthcare community has been plunged into mourning following the brutal killing of Nurse Chinemerem Chukwumeziem, a dedicated staff member of the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Jabi.

In a stinging indictment of the nation’s security architecture, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Federal Health Institutions Sector, described the incident as a “grim reflection” of the worsening insecurity facing frontline workers.

A Devoted Life Cut Short

The tragedy unfolded in the early days of the New Year. According to a statement released by NANNM National Secretary, Enya Osinachi, Nurse Chukwumeziem had just completed her afternoon shift at FMC Jabi, where she was known for her devoted care to patients.

She reportedly boarded public transport to return home but never arrived. Her life was cut short by violent criminals, making her one of the first high-profile victims of insecurity in the FCT in 2026.

Healthcare Under Siege

Condemning the murder, Osinachi highlighted the unique vulnerabilities faced by nurses, many of whom must commute at odd hours due to long shifts.

“This is evidence of a worsening insecurity that threatens those who save lives,” the statement read. “Nurses are essential caregivers and often the primary breadwinners for their families. When a nurse is killed, the nation loses more than just a professional; it loses patient morale and public trust.”

A Call for Immediate Action

The association is now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to implement urgent protection measures for healthcare workers. NANNM emphasised that this tragedy must serve as a “turning point” for the safety of personnel commuting within major Nigerian cities.

“We cannot continue to lose our best hands to avoidable violence,” Osinachi added, urging a decisive investigation to ensure the perpetrators of the FMC Jabi nurse’s murder are brought to justice.
