EFCC Warns Politicians Against Smear Campaigns as 2027 Approaches

Happiness Udisifan, January 8, 2026

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has warned politicians and groups with vested interests against attempts to undermine the agency through what it described as coordinated campaigns of calumny ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the EFCC spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, said the Commission had uncovered plans by some disgruntled individuals to sponsor media attacks aimed at discrediting both the institution and its leadership.

According to Oyewale, the campaign is being driven by what he described as “a motley crowd of paid jobbers” allegedly recruited by politicians and interest groups linked to suspects currently under investigation or facing prosecution by the Commission.

He said the attacks are specifically targeted at the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, and the Commission itself, through what he described as phantom allegations of political bias in the discharge of its statutory mandate.

The EFCC spokesperson maintained that the Commission remains committed to professionalism, impartiality, and the rule of law, stressing that its operations are guided strictly by evidence and due process, not political considerations.

Oyewale further cautioned that attempts to distract or intimidate the agency would not deter it from carrying out its anti-corruption mandate, assuring Nigerians that the Commission would continue to pursue its responsibilities without fear or favour.
