Troops of the Operation Hadin Kai have foiled a coordinated террорист attack on Kukareta community in Damaturu Local Government Area of Yobe State, killing 24 insurgents and recovering a large cache of weapons.
The military said the attack occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when terrorists launched an assault on the community but were met with a swift and coordinated response from troops under Sector 2.
In a statement issued by the Theatre Command’s Media Information Officer, Sani Uba, the troops engaged the attackers in a fierce battle that lasted several hours, forcing them to retreat in disarray.
Uba said the soldiers carried out what he described as a deliberate offensive-defensive operation, successfully containing the attack and inflicting heavy losses on the insurgents.
He disclosed that 24 terrorists were neutralised during the encounter, while ongoing clearance operations have led to the recovery of weapons including 18 AK-47 rifles, three general-purpose machine guns, two anti-aircraft guns, rocket-propelled grenade tubes, mortar tubes, hand grenades, and large quantities of ammunition.
The army also confirmed that two soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange but have since been stabilised. An armoured vehicle deployed as reinforcement was damaged, with its tyres blown out during the confrontation.
Uba added that troops are continuing exploitation operations along the withdrawal routes of the fleeing insurgents, where traces of blood and abandoned medical supplies indicate further casualties.
The military reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining pressure on insurgents in the North-East and ensuring the safety of communities across the region.
