Soliu Oyesiji, April 22, 2026April 22, 2026

The Nigeria Police Force has taken a major step toward modernising its operations with the introduction of eco-friendly vehicles, marking the beginning of a transition to green energy in its fleet.

At a ceremony held on Tuesday, the Force received three specialised buses from the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPF-TF) and the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (PI-CNG & EV).

The event, attended by senior officials from both organisations, signalled the commencement of a broader plan to integrate compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles into police operations nationwide.

Speaking at the ceremony, representatives of the donor organisations described the gesture as the first phase of a comprehensive initiative to upgrade the Police operational fleet.

They disclosed plans to convert existing vehicles to run on CNG, a move expected to significantly cut fuel costs and reduce the environmental footprint of police activities.

Beyond vehicle provision, the initiative also includes capacity-building programmes aimed at ensuring long-term sustainability and technical expertise within the Force.

Responding, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, expressed appreciation for the support, describing the transition as both strategic and timely.

“This transition to CNG and electric vehicles is a strategic necessity that aligns the Nigeria Police Force with global best practices in logistics and resource management,” he said.

The IGP assured that the newly acquired buses would enhance personnel mobility and welfare, while also improving operational efficiency.

He further revealed plans to establish in-house conversion centres to enable the Force independently maintain and adapt its fleet to emerging technologies.

The ceremony featured the official handover of the vehicle keys and an inspection of the buses, underscoring the partnership’s commitment to equipping the Police with modern, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable transport solutions.

The initiative is expected to boost operational readiness while aligning the Force with global trends in clean energy and smart policing.
