Konate Hints at New Liverpool Deal as Defender Sees “Big Chance” of Staying at Anfield

Soliu Oyesiji, April 20, 2026April 20, 2026

Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konaté has revealed he is “close to an agreement” over a new contract with the club and believes there is a strong possibility he will remain at Anfield beyond this season.

The France international, whose current deal expires this summer, joined Liverpool FC from RB Leipzig for £35 million in 2021 and has since established himself as a key figure in the club’s defence.

Speaking after Liverpool’s Merseyside derby victory on Sunday, the 26-year-old dismissed speculation over his future, insisting discussions with the club have been ongoing for some time.

“There are many things people have said, but for a long time we have spoken with the club, and we are close to an agreement,” Konaté said.

He added that an extension remains his preferred outcome.“For sure, there is a big chance that I’m here next season. This is what I’ve always wanted,” he said.

Konaté explained that he is simply awaiting final agreement on the contract terms, adding that conversations with the club’s hierarchy have been consistent throughout the process.

He also suggested that the timing of the negotiations mirrors previous contract situations involving senior teammates last season, describing it as part of the club’s usual approach.

Since arriving at Anfield, Konaté has made 113 Premier League appearances, winning the league title last season as well as the FA Cup and EFL Cup in 2022.

Although Liverpool will end the current campaign without silverware, the club remains on course for Champions League qualification and is currently positioned fifth in the Premier League table, seven points clear of sixth-placed Chelsea.
