Obi–Kwankwaso Bloc Emerges as New Power Push Reshapes ADC Presidential Race

Soliu Oyesiji, April 20, 2026

Supporters of former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi, and ex-Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, have launched a new political pressure group known as the Obi–Kwankwaso (OK) Movement, in a fresh realignment ahead of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary.

The group announced its formation on Monday in Abuja, declaring that it has already established structures across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with appointed coordinators at state and zonal levels to drive mobilisation.

In a statement, the movement’s National Publicity Secretary, Justin Ijeh, described it as a broad coalition drawing support from the Obidient Movement, Kwankwasiyya, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), and the ADC.

He said the initiative was a response to Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges, positioning the platform as a coordinated force for political change.

“Nigeria stands at a defining crossroads. The Obi–Kwankwaso Movement is a coordinated national engine for reform and national rebirth,” Ijeh said.

He added that the movement rejects divisive politics based on ethnicity or religion, insisting it seeks to unify Nigerians under a common reform agenda.

According to him, the group has already built a nationwide structure and will begin formal inauguration of state chapters in the coming weeks.

“The structures are set, the vision is clear. This movement is open to all Nigerians who believe the country’s current condition is not its final destiny,” he said.

Reacting to the development, the National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, confirmed alignment between the groups, saying efforts are ongoing to consolidate support around a joint political direction within the ADC.

The emergence of the new bloc comes amid intensifying jostling within the ADC ahead of its presidential primary, particularly following the declaration of interest by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Atiku has insisted he will not step down for any aspirant, a position that has heightened tensions within the opposition coalition and triggered internal debates over consensus-building.

Other prominent figures reportedly eyeing the ADC ticket include Kwankwaso and former Sokoto State governor, Aminu Tambuwal, while the party continues to attract heavyweight politicians such as former Senate President David Mark, ex-Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party has dismissed viral posts suggesting it is courting Obi and Kwankwaso to return, describing them as fake and unauthorised communications.

The party, led by Interim National Chairman Nenadi Usman, said the messages did not originate from its official channels, as political realignments continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
