David Egbede, April 17, 2026April 17, 2026

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed that two candidates sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), who were kidnapped while travelling in a commercial bus, have escaped from their captors.

The victims were among about 14 candidates abducted while heading to Otukpo for the examination.

Authorities say efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.

According to the police, the incident involved a Toyota Hiace bus operated by Benue Links Limited.

One suspect has already been taken into custody in connection with the abduction.
Police spokesperson, Udeme Edet, revealed that the driver violated company regulations by embarking on an unauthorised late-night trip and picking up passengers without proper documentation.

Security operatives, including the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, have been deployed and are working alongside other agencies to track down the perpetrators and ensure the safe return of those still in captivity.
