FG Orders Independent Probe into Jilli Market Airstrike

David Egbede, April 15, 2026April 15, 2026

The Federal Government has directed a full, independent investigation into the airstrike on Jilli market in Borno State, according to Mohammed Idris.

Idris said the probe will examine the intelligence, targeting process, and execution of the operation carried out by the Nigerian Air Force.

The strike, which reportedly hit a market along the Borno–Yobe axis, led to multiple civilian casualties, with rights group Amnesty International claiming over 100 deaths, while the military maintained it targeted insurgents.

The minister expressed regret over the loss of civilian lives, stressing that every Nigerian life is valued, while noting that the area has long been identified as a stronghold for Boko Haram and ISWAP activities.

He added that security agencies had conducted weeks of surveillance before the operation and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to accountability and precision in its counter-terrorism efforts.

The government is also collaborating with emergency agencies to provide relief to affected communities, while urging residents to adhere to security advisories and avoid restricted zones.
