Iran has strongly criticised the United States over its newly imposed maritime blockade, describing the move as a “grave violation” of its sovereignty and territorial integrity amid rising tensions between both nations.
In a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Iran’s UN envoy Amir Saeid Iravani said the blockade breaches international law and threatens regional stability.
“The imposition of a maritime blockade constitutes a grave violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Iravani stated. He added that the action also violates key principles governing international waters.
The development follows an order by US President Donald Trump directing a blockade on vessels entering or leaving Iranian ports after peace talks collapsed. Washington warned that any Iranian forces attempting to challenge the move would face military action.
The blockade took effect Monday despite a recently agreed two-week ceasefire, brokered with the involvement of regional players including Pakistan and Qatar.
Guterres has urged all sides to respect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global energy route through which a significant share of the world’s oil and gas supply passes.
Iran warned that the blockade could escalate tensions further in an already volatile region, calling on countries hosting US military bases to halt actions it described as unlawful.
