A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adelaja Adeoye, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 governorship election in Lagos State.
Adeoye, a media strategist and real estate entrepreneur, announced his ambition in a statement issued on Sunday, saying his decision was driven by the need to challenge the state’s entrenched political structure and reposition the PDP as a viable alternative in Lagos politics.
According to him, opposition politics in the state must evolve to offer voters meaningful choices and strengthen democratic participation.
“My decision to step forward is not merely a declaration of interest. It represents the willingness to challenge entrenched political structures and present Lagosians with a credible alternative,” he said.
The PDP chieftain noted that his participation in internal party discussions, particularly around possible zoning arrangements ahead of the 2027 elections, had reinforced his belief that the party could regain political relevance in the state.
Adeoye said his ambition was also aimed at rebuilding the PDP after years of electoral setbacks in Lagos.
“The PDP remains a platform capable of offering Lagosians a different vision of governance if we unite behind credible leadership and pursue reforms that inspire public confidence,” he said.
He added that discussions within the party on zoning and internal reforms could strengthen unity and broaden the PDP’s appeal to voters.
Adeoye argued that Nigeria’s political landscape must increasingly reflect the aspirations of younger generations seeking innovative and people-centred leadership.
“Our politics must begin to reflect the aspirations of a new generation that seeks innovation, accountability and inclusive governance,” he said.
Highlighting his political background, Adeoye said he previously served as the pioneer Lagos State Publicity Secretary of the Action Democratic Party (ADP) in 2017 before becoming the party’s National Publicity Secretary in 2019.
He also contested for the House of Representatives in 2022 under the PDP to represent Oshodi-Isolo Federal Constituency II in Lagos West Senatorial District.
Adeoye said his experience in communications, entrepreneurship and grassroots engagement would help mobilise voters seeking new ideas and leadership alternatives in the state.
“Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital, deserves leadership bold enough to challenge old assumptions and innovative enough to chart a new path for inclusive development,” he said.
He added that his entry into the governorship race could inject fresh energy into the PDP as it prepares for the 2027 elections.
