Slot Set to Stay: Liverpool Boss Edges Closer to Champions League Lifeline

Soliu Oyesiji, April 21, 2026

Arne Slot looks increasingly likely to remain in charge at Liverpool next season, with the club moving closer to securing a place in the Champions League.

The Merseyside club currently sits fifth in the Premier League, holding a seven-point cushion over Chelsea in sixth with just five matches left. That advantage, combined with improving form and rivals slipping, has eased much of the uncertainty surrounding Slot’s future.

Qualification for Europe’s top competition appears within reach, especially with fifth place now likely to be enough following Arsenal’s progression to the semi-finals. This shift has strengthened confidence inside the club that Slot will continue his tenure at Anfield.

Despite guiding Liverpool to the league title last season, Slot has faced mounting scrutiny during a more difficult second campaign. The team is set to finish without silverware and trails behind the pace set by Arsenal and Manchester City.

Club legend Jamie Carragher recently suggested that internal sentiment points toward stability, noting that Slot is expected to stay if Champions League qualification is secured, something that now looks increasingly probable.

Behind the scenes, Liverpool’s leadership remains supportive and is already planning for the summer transfer window. With Mohamed Salah set to depart, reinforcements are a priority, including interest in a new forward and strengthening across multiple areas of the squad.

Captain Virgil van Dijk has openly acknowledged the team’s struggles this season, calling performances “below standard” despite a crucial derby win over Everton. Still, he emphasized the importance of finishing strong and securing a Champions League spot.

With several tough fixtures remaining including clashes against top-five rivals and Chelsea, Liverpool’s season is far from over. But for now, momentum is building, and Slot’s position appears increasingly secure.
