Rivers High Court Suspends Fubara Impeachment Proceedings

David Egbede, January 17, 2026January 17, 2026

A Rivers State High Court sitting in Oyigbo Local Government Area has intervened in the ongoing political tension in the state, issuing an interim injunction that temporarily stops all actions connected to the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Nma-Odu.

In a ruling delivered in Port Harcourt, the court restrained the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and 32 other defendants from taking any steps to advance the impeachment process.

The court further ordered the Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor-Amadi, not to receive, forward, consider, or act on any impeachment-related request, resolution, or document from the Assembly for the purpose of setting up an investigative panel, pending the outcome of the suit.

Presiding judge, Justice Florence Fiberesima, adjourned the case to January 23 for the hearing of the motion on notice, as the impeachment dispute moves from the political stage to the courtroom.
