Nenadi Usman Elected Labour Party Chairman, Makes History as First Woman to Lead Major Party

The Labour Party has elected former minister and senator, Nenadi Usman, as its National Chairman at the party’s national convention held in Umuahia, Abia State.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by Ken Eluma Asogwa, the party’s National Publicity Secretary.

Her emergence marks a significant milestone, making her the first woman to be elected national chairman of a major political party in Nigeria.

Usman takes over the role after previously leading the party’s National Caretaker Committee, a position she assumed in September 2024 following the expiration of the tenure of the former leadership. Her leadership period was marked by internal disputes, which were eventually settled through court rulings that affirmed her position.

In January 2026, the Independent National Electoral Commission had earlier recognised her leadership, in line with a Federal High Court judgement delivered on January 21, a decision later upheld by the Court of Appeal in April.

Speaking after her election on Teusday, Usman thanked party members for their support and pledged to strengthen unity within the party while positioning it for future electoral contests.

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, who hosted the convention, urged the newly elected leadership to provide direction and deepen the party’s structures across the country.

Also elected at the convention was Ken Eluma Asogwa as National Publicity Secretary, alongside other members of the National Working Committee, who were subsequently sworn into office.

The new leadership is expected to steer the party as it builds on its performance in the 2023 general elections and prepares for the 2027 polls.
