Multiple Explosions Rock Maiduguri, Several Feared Dead

Rejoice Ewodage, March 16, 2026March 16, 2026

Multiple explosions struck parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State, on Monday evening, leaving several people dead and others injured.

The blasts occurred shortly after residents broke their fast during the ongoing Ramadan at about 7:00 p.m.

According to preliminary reports, the explosions occurred at three locations across the city — the Post Office area, the main gate of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the popular Monday Market.

Sources said the explosions were believed to have been planted by suspected members of the extremist group Boko Haram and detonated at intervals of about five minutes.

Witness videos circulating online show victims being evacuated and rushed to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Borno State, Nahum Daso, confirmed that explosions occurred in the city but said details were still emerging.

“Yes, there were reports of explosions at University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital main gate and Post Office area, but the one at Monday Market I have no information but I will get back to you as soon as I have it,” he said.

Daso added that casualty figures remain unclear as victims were taken to different hospitals across the state capital.

Less than 24 hours before the explosions, suspected insurgents reportedly attacked the Ajilari community on the outskirts of Maiduguri, heightening security concerns in the region.

Reacting to the incident, the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, condemned the attack in strong terms and described it as a cowardly act targeting innocent residents during the holy month of Ramadan.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Dauda Iliya, the governor expressed sympathy to the victims and their families.

“I am deeply saddened by the explosions that occurred in parts of the metropolis on Monday evening. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims and those injured as a result of the blast. The act is utterly condemnable, barbaric, and inhumane,” Zulum said.

The governor, who is currently in Saudi Arabia for the Lesser Hajj, suggested that the recent surge in attacks may be linked to intensified military operations against insurgents in the Sambisa Forest and other hideouts.

He assured residents that security agencies were working to stabilise the situation and urged the public to remain calm while maintaining vigilance, particularly in places of worship and other public areas.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, while security agencies continue efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties from the blasts.
