Tragedy struck Kano in the early hours of Thursday when a woman who gave birth to quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital died just hours after delivery.
The Kano State Ministry of Health confirmed that the deceased, Hafsatu Yusuf, passed away around 2:00 a.m. due to complications shortly after childbirth.
The ministry’s spokesperson, Nabilusi Na’isa, told journalists that medical personnel tried to stabilize her condition after she experienced severe bleeding, but she unfortunately did not survive.
“The patient developed complications after delivery, and despite all medical interventions to save her life, she unfortunately succumbed,” Na’isa said.
He explained that while earlier scans indicated she was carrying triplets, additional babies were discovered during labor, resulting in the birth of quintuplets—three boys and two girls.
Na’isa added that the newborns are currently receiving intensive care at the hospital.
The deceased’s husband, Salisu Nufi’u, a tricycle operator, had earlier expressed appreciation to the Kano State Government for taking full responsibility for the medical expenses of his wife and the babies.
The condition of the quintuplets has not been officially disclosed, but hospital sources said they remain under close medical supervision.
Meanwhile, family members and sympathisers were seen at the hospital premises, mourning the loss as news of her death spread.
