Ipswich Seal Premier League Return in Style with QPR Rout

Soliu Oyesiji, May 2, 2026

Ipswich Town have secured promotion back to the Premier League in emphatic fashion, easing past Queens Park Rangers in a dominant performance that sparked jubilant celebrations at Portman Road.

Under manager Kieran McKenna, Ipswich wasted no time asserting control, with early goals from George Hirst and Jaden Philogene settling nerves and setting the tone for a memorable afternoon.

The hosts burst out of the blocks, with Hirst opening the scoring inside three minutes after a low cross from Leif Davis caused confusion in the QPR defence. Just six minutes later, Philogene doubled the lead, calmly finishing a slick attacking move to put Ipswich firmly in command.

The victory effectively sealed automatic promotion from the EFL Championship, ending any hopes of rivals closing the gap and confirming Ipswich’s return to the top flight.

Despite expectations of a straightforward campaign following last season’s relegation, Ipswich endured an inconsistent run at times. However, when it mattered most, McKenna’s side delivered a commanding performance to secure their objective.

QPR, who arrived winless in five matches and without a recognised striker, struggled to cope with Ipswich’s intensity, although they improved slightly towards the end of the first half.

The hosts continued to create chances after the break, with Philogene and Dara O’Shea both going close before Kasey McAteer sealed the win with a late third goal.

The atmosphere at Portman Road reflected the magnitude of the occasion, as thousands of supporters filled the stadium and surrounding streets, celebrating another successful promotion under McKenna.

It marks the third promotion push achieved under the manager in four seasons, highlighting Ipswich’s resurgence and growing stability.

While attention will soon turn to ensuring a stronger stay in the Premier League than their previous stint, the club and its supporters are expected to savour a well-earned return to England’s top tier.
